February is dedicated to celebrate Black History Month, we would like to contribute to the celebration of African Americans by creating an article and include various resources to support this community.

We’ve centrally located all of Des Moines, Iowa’s black owned businesses in one place, giving one the ability to fulfill any of their needs with a black-owned establishment. Our goal is to expand the lifespan of the dollar within the black community.

BHM Des Moines Public Library Books and Events:

The Des Moines Public Library has created different events for the month of February to celebrate and learn about African American’s history. In addition, they have created a list of book recommendations written by black authors and educating books for all age groups.

George Washington Carver Archives with Simpson College

Learn about George Washington Carver’s time at Iowa’s Simpson College with archivist Cyd Dyer. Learn about the unique connections between George W. Carver and Simpson College through stories and artifacts.

Black History Month Door Decorating Contest

The Rhema Word Restoration Ministries Youth Department presents a Black History Month Door Decorating Contest for youth ages 5 and up. Please submit all pictures or videos of door decor with paragraph summary to rwrmyouth@gmail.com by Monday, February 14, 2022. Prizes are $75 for 1st place, $50 for 2nd place, and $25 for 3rd place. Presentation on Friday, February 25th, 2022 at 6:00 pm (CST)

African American Genealogy presentation by Nicka Smith

We understand the importance of knowing your past, where you came from and who are your ancestors. We have linked this presentation by Nicka Smith happening on Thursday, Feb 10 2022 at 12:00 P.M. to 1:00 P.M. (CST) in which you will learn how to research the lives of your ancestors using tribal records.
